Day hospitalisation

If you have to undergo an operation/treatment in the surgical day hospital, this will be arranged with you by your attending physician. You will be admitted in the morning and can go home the same day. 

How to prepare for admission?

You should inform us in advance of your preference of room type at the consultation where you will be admitted. If possible, we will try to take this into account. The choice of room type will affect the cost of your admission.

For any treatment/procedure involving anaesthesia:

• you must provide a driver to take you home; you may not drive a motor vehicle yourself
• you may not be alone for the first 24 hours.

You should make sure that you have identified a contact person who can be reached by telephone during your stay.

If you have young children, it is best to organise their care in advance (the time of discharge may vary).

To ensure that things run smoothly at the day hospital, please limit the number of visitors and the immediate presence of your carer during your stay.

Preoperative consultation

For your pre-operative examinations, you can choose how you would like them to be carried out:

At the pre-operative consultation within the hospital.

• Aalst: continuous consultation from 9.00 to 17.30 (X-2). Appointment by phone: 053 72 40 50
• Asse: Continuous consultation from 9h00 till 17h30 (1st floor, info at reception). Appointment by phone: 02 300 60 89

At your general practitioner's

• Examinations at the request of the treating doctor (EKG, laboratory, lung X-ray). You must bring these results with you on the day of your admission.
• Preoperative questionnaire to be completed by you or your GP.

Important: The anaesthetic consent form (last page of the pre-operative questionnaire) must be signed by you! For children under 18, this declaration must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.

The day of the operation

If you are ill or have a fever on the day before the operation, please inform the day surgery centre by telephone before 4 pm.

We ask you to be present at the agreed time so that the planning can be respected. If you are unable to attend, please notify the secretariat of your attending physician or the surgical day hospital on the day itself:

You read your identity card at the registration kiosks, where you will be given a serial number for your registration with the admissions department. Then you go to the day hospital with your patient stickers:

• Aalst: X3 Noord (3rd floor X-block)
• Asse: 1st floor
• Ninove: 2nd floor

What should you bring along?

• identity card
• blood group card (if in your possession)
• hospitalisation insurance affiliation card/forms
• in case of admission as a result of an accident at work: name of your employer, insurance policy
• Referral letter from the attending physician (if in your possession) with the reason for your admission and your medical history.
• certificate and forms that need to be filled in: mutual health insurance, work disability... (Talk to the nurse about this when you are admitted)
• list of home medication + medication in the packaging
• Your declaration of consent, if we do not have it already

Definitely do not bring with you: jewellery, valuable objects, money

What is allowed? What is not allowed?

• You must come to the hospital RIGHT AWAY. This means: do not eat or drink anything after midnight (do not drink water either) unless you are explicitly instructed otherwise.
• Brushing your teeth is allowed.
• Smoking is prohibited 24 hours before the operation.

Pay attention to your personal hygiene

• Take a bath or shower the morning of the operation!
• You may depilate the area of your body that is to be operated on the evening before the operation. Use a Ladyshave or clippers for this purpose; under no circumstances use a razor. Remove all make-up, nail varnish, gel nails, hairpins and piercings.

How will your admission proceed?

Before the operation

• On arrival at the day hospital, you will be shown to your room. You will also be informed of the schedule for the day.
• In the course of the day (depending on the time of your procedure or examination), the nurse will come and see you to prepare yourself. At that time, the time at which your operation or examination is scheduled will be announced.
• The time at which you are actually taken to the operating theatre can always differ from the planning time.
• On average, you will spend three hours in the operating theatre and the recovery room for observation. No visitors are allowed here.

After the operation

• After discharge from the recovery room, you will remain in the day hospital for a few hours.
• After a general anaesthetic, you will first be given water and possibly yoghurt. It is best to have an easily digestible meal at home (to prevent nausea after the operation).

Discharge

Your attending physician and/or anaesthetist will visit you before you are discharged from hospital. In exceptional cases, your doctor may decide that a subsequent admission is necessary.

All documents (certificates/work) must be completed by the attending physician. When you are discharged, you must report to the nursing station. You will be given the following:

• discharge letter for your family doctor
• pain medication for the first 24 hours
• appointment for a check-up
• any insurance documents and work certificates that were issued before the operation
• any certificates required for home nursing, physiotherapy, etc.

You will be asked to sign a discharge statement. You will find it in the brochure that can be downloaded at the bottom of this web page.

What you should NOT do

• Make sure that you are not alone at home! An adult must remain near you and be able to contact the family doctor or hospital in the event of any problems
• Do not drive a vehicle
• Do not drive or operate machinery
• Do not take important decisions or sign documents, especially documents of a legal nature
• Do not drink alcohol
• Do not take sedatives unless they have been expressly prescribed by the anaesthetist.
